On Racing Too Much….

I can remember when I first started coaching IM athletes, and everyone thought that I was CRAZY when I would say an athlete should only race the distance twice a season to not risk health, injury, and most importantly long-term progress…..The sacred goal of the athlete that should trump everything else, in 95% of the cases. That was right around the same time that we started seeing athletes doing 3, 4, or 5 IMs in a season, and doing it with acute success. I stuck to my guns at that time, and only allowed the athletes I coached to race two per year. I took a lot of heat at the time for this, but insisted that the frequent racer’s success wouldn’t last, and we would see them hurt, or burnt up within 18 months (the “dull” athlete syndrome). This proved true, eventually, and the athletes I worked with improved every year, and eventually went on to win Ironman distance races from modest backgrounds.

Fast forward almost 10 years, the age of KPR, and an almost assumed “right” for athletes to race plenty. As a coach, you may know what’s physically best for an athlete, and many times you try to balance this with the mental aspects of the athlete and what keeps them motivated. Over the course of the past 18-24 months, I’ve simply allowed too many of the athletes I work with to bend me away from the physical to quench the short term mental with the following story:

  • I need to race this IM to earn KPR for Kona.
  • I need to race to stay motivated, otherwise I can’t make these sacrifices day in and day out!
  • I love to race!
  • I need to race to make money!

This all coupled with the fact that every Tom, Dick, and Harry is doing it (except those athletes that are making long-term progress, every single year). SO, I sit in a place where I look back and say how did I get here with some of these folks…..I may not even agree, at a basic level, with the how we managed stress during the past 12-month period (one of the most important tasks I have). I’ll take full responsibility for allowing the athletes I work with, in some cases, to slowly bend me into a position, and program, that I don’t even agree with. Bottomline is that although the above arguments look like good ones, they are short-term gratifications, that undermine the exact things they are trying to quench (take care of the body and the mind will follow). Lets review the reality:

  1. “I need to race this IM to earn KPR for Kona.” – If you can’t get to Kona with a reasonable race schedule, you probably shouldn’t be there. Many athletes will counter this and say that their goal in life is “to get to Kona as a PRO! I don’t care if I’m burnt up after that!” I’ve heard this countless times and even have bent my approach to do this for athletes. They went, they raced, and guess what? 6-months later they were not happy athletes. What they thought would provide ultimate happiness, actually was not too satiating, long-term, and the fact that they are burnt up is a lasting impact that mentally is tough to dig out of. A year of lost progress. If, instead, they had not crammed to get to Kona they could have continued along their long-term progress, and arrived there when they were ready, and at a whole new talent level. A much more positive atmosphere.
  2. “I need to race to stay motivated, otherwise I can’t make these sacrifices day in and day out!” – Make the sacrifices and shut up! This will pay off later. Short-term weakness leads to long-term disappointment. The tough unmotivating sacrifices, now, are much easier to deal with than the athlete that over-raced and is now burnt up with all the mental baggage that goes along with that. Believe me. I’ve seen both MANY times. Stay patient.
  3. “I love to race!” – That’s fantastic. We all do. You are no different than any other triathlete on the planet. Too much of a good thing makes that good thing not so good, and not so much fun anymore. Shocking…It is MUCH more rewarding for an athlete to apply patience, race less, but race well, and consistently, when they do. This is a happy athlete. Being upset about not racing, when you want, is MUCH less damaging than being upset after dull, underperformed racing. One has lasting mental fitness ramifications, and the other does not. One has physical ramification. The other, physical benefits.  Ease up on the race gluttony.
  4. “I need to race to make money!” Focus on your training, and long-term progression, and the money will become a natural extension of that. I coach 15 professional athletes, and never once have I seen the athlete who chases money make as much as they could longer-term by focusing on what was important for development. Never mind not making as much chasing money, as is spent chasing it…

Out of this comes two policies that ALL QT2 coaches and athletes will use going forward:

Policy #1 – In the past couple of years, athletes who really, really wanted to race more than I was comfortable with, I’d try and show the risks of doing so, and if they were okay with them, we’d do our best to attack the schedule (5-10 years ago I was much tougher). What I’ve learned, over the past couple of years, is that not even a single one of those cases ends up with a happy athlete in the end. They usually agree to the risks that I present, upfront, either denying them, or not fully allowing themselves to understand them, then flash to 12-18 months down the road, when those risks bite them, they just aren’t happy. With that, I will not let anyone race more than 3 IMs within a trailing 12 month period. Period! I prefer two…Again, I haven’t seen a SINGLE athlete that is happy after violating this for more than a year or two. I say happy, because it’s not about performance. Most realized they may not be able to perform as sharp as a razor in that scenario, but then when the physical and mental dullness hits, they are just not happy campers. We race to be happy, in the first place, and happy usually comes with progress. 80 percent of the cases that violate that general metric end up injured AND unhappy! So, with that I’m done with it. Period! Anyone wants to race more than that, they can find another coach or coaching group. It’s for the good of all of the athletes, I promise. It hurts me to see athletes busted up – especially when I’m against that sort of thing, in the first place.  Its easy to get caught up in the sexiness of racing, and being in the “limelight”. The KPR situation and other uninformed athletes racing have made the last three years get out of hand on what athletes think is acceptable.

Policy #2 – Any athlete who comes to our early season PRO camp with less than 8 weeks of work in them will be grouped together and take an alternate path at camp. This group will be lower volume, no best effort runs, and lower quantity of bike intensity. They will also be doing strength, stability, and/or core work, as needed. Every athlete the past two years who has had fewer than 8 weeks of training coming in, ended up very uncrisp, later in the Spring or Summer. Most times it was folks who had also violated Policy #1. No surprises! The camp is intense, and you need to have fully recovered from the previous year, and built yourself to be able to handle the load of camp the following year. Don’t rush it.

So, why can’t athletes judge this for themselves? They just can’t think at this chronic a level of fatigue and chronic systematic stress. Let’s be clear, its not that an athlete can’t perform well doing a cluster of IMs. After all, I had an athlete last year do 3 IMs in 6 weeks, win two of them and place 3rd at the other. We masterfully crafted the training and restoration techniques to make it all work well. Its about the impact that cluster has on the athlete 6-12 months down the road. The dangerous thing is that most athletes think of the cluster and when they come out of that successful, they are excited and really hit the gas……self imposed performance pressures and expectations along with added excitement for physical stress. A perfect recipe for disaster.

Lets review some thoughts with the cooked athlete:

  • no long-term progress year-to-year
  • dull
  • “I lost my speed”
  • injured
  • not motivated, little desire to train (lost intrinsic motivation)
  • race gluttony – race one, didn’t go how I wanted, so lets do another!
  • training feels like beating a dead horse

Now lets review some thoughts with the properly race-loaded athlete:

  • year-to-year progress
  • crisp
  • able to create high quality sessions
  • motivated to train
  • training feels like it is absorbed
  • uninjured

So there you have it! Nothing new here or items I didn’t already know. I am now just renewing my fortitude in sticking to this stuff going forward. I’m not messing around, and there are no exceptions. Again, it’s not for me, it’s just because of what I’ve seen going on with athletes within and without our group, in this new world of racing. I’m not typically one for general rules, but when I’ve looked back at many case studies, I just don’t see an athlete who has pulled it off and made the progress they would like over the long haul. Done, and onto a crisp 2015!
